Your Kid's First Haircut: Tips for Parents in Richardson

A first haircut is a small milestone that can feel like a big one, for your kid and for you. A little planning goes a long way. Here is how to make it easy, from picking the day to what happens in the chair, with what to expect at KP's Barber Shop in Richardson.

When is the right age?

There is no set age. Babies grow hair at very different speeds, and some have a full head of it at six months while others barely need a trim at two. A few signs that it is time:

  • Hair falls into the eyes.
  • The back tangles and is hard to brush.
  • The ends look uneven or wispy.
  • You want a tidier look for school or for photos.

At KP's we cut kids of every age, including under 3. Our kids' haircut page shows the age groups, and every price is on the prices page.

Pick the right time

Timing matters more than anything else with little ones.

  • Go when your child is rested and fed. After a nap works much better than right before one.
  • Fit it around their routine, not yours. A cranky, hungry toddler and a pair of clippers are not a good mix.
  • Book ahead if you can. Waiting is the hardest part for small kids. Walk-ins are welcome, but booking on Booksy holds your time, so you can walk in and sit right down.
  • Check the hours. We open at 10 AM every day; the full hours are on our contact page.

Talk about it first

Kids handle new things better when they know what is coming. A day or two before:

  • Explain it in simple words: "The barber will use scissors and a clipper that buzzes. It tickles a little, and it doesn't hurt."
  • Show them a video of a haircut, or let them watch you or a sibling get one.
  • Play barbershop at home with a comb and a spray bottle of water, and let them be the barber too.

Keep it light and matter of fact. If you seem nervous, they will pick up on it.

What to bring

A small bag makes the visit smoother:

  • A photo of the style you want, if you have one in mind. It helps your barber more than any description.
  • Something familiar: a favorite toy, a book or a show on your phone to watch in the chair.
  • A clean shirt for afterwards. Tiny hairs get everywhere, and they itch.
  • A snack for after, not during. Hair and snacks don't mix.
  • An envelope if you want to keep a lock of hair from the first cut.

What happens in the chair

We go slow, keep it fun and let them watch in the mirror. Seeing what is happening makes most kids far calmer than having it happen behind their head. Some little ones feel safer on a parent's lap the first time; ask your barber what works best for your child.

A good barber shows the clipper first and lets your child hear it buzz before it gets anywhere near their hair. Many barbers start with scissors around the face and ears and use the clipper only where it is needed.

For a first haircut, keep the style simple: tidy the ends, clear the eyes and clean up the neck. A fade or a hair design can wait until your kid is used to the chair.

If it doesn't go perfectly

Tears happen, and they are completely normal. Stay calm, keep talking in a soft voice, and let your child take a short break if they need one. A first haircut doesn't have to be perfect. Hair grows back, and the second visit is almost always easier than the first.

Afterwards, make a fuss about how good they look. Let them see it in the mirror and tell them how brave they were. That is what they will remember next time.

After the first haircut

How often to come back depends on the style. Longer kids' cuts usually need a trim every six to eight weeks. Short styles like fades look sharp for about three to four weeks before the edges grow in.

Older kids and teens often start asking for the same cuts as adults. If your kid has a style in mind, our guide to skin fades and tapers explains the difference so you both know what to ask for.
